Workforce

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalency.  Students must take a CNA course that is State of Maine approved.  Courses include classroom work, skills labs, and clinical experience.  At the successful completion of the course, students take the State Certification Examination.

All of our CNA courses are State of Maine approved.  Courses are offered at a variety of Portland locations such as:

• The Barron Center
• First Atlantic Healthcare
• Maine Medical Center
• New England Rehabilitation Hospital
   

Tuition varies based on the program qualified for; no cost options are available.  Tuition includes texts, materials, and fees. 

Complete this form or contact the Portland Adult Education office at 874-8155 to sign up for an intake session.  Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalency. 
 

The admission process includes the completion of an application packet, completion of a CASAS test (a reading assessment) with appropriate score, and an interview. 
 
A complete application packet consists of:

• Completed Application form
• Two copies of a picture ID with signature (driver's license or State ID card)
• One copy of proof of High School Graduation or equivalency
• Two copies of your Social Security Card
• A signed SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) form (page 6 of Application).
• Two professional written references addressed to Portland Adult Education. The references have to be from people in a leadership capacity (for example, current and past supervisors). If you have not been employed for the last few years, another source of reference such as teacher, volunteer group leader, or clergy is acceptable.
